Vol. V, No. 1 (Jan.-Jun., 2016) Political geography and geopolitics: a different story for new disciplinary limits

Deadline for proposals: 15 November 2015
Deadline for articles: 30 January 2016

GEOPOLITICA. Rivista dell’Istituto in Alti Studi di Geopolitica e Scienze Ausiliarie is accepting submissions for its first 2016 issue (January-June).
The volume’s subject matter is: Political geography and geopolitics: a different story for new disciplinary limits? (editor: Dr. Matteo Marconi).
For more than thirty years the spatial turn has changed the way political geography and geopolitics are done in academic circles. The paradigm shift has imposed the revision of fundamental concepts, expanding and subjecting the principle of academic limit itself to radical criticism. At the same time, a strong deliberation on the historical events of the two branches of knowledge has commenced. Surprisingly, however, the attention of scholars has focused mainly on classic authors, i.e. it has not rediscovered the past from an equivalent perspective of disciplinary opening. The lack of attention dedicated to this interpretation has entailed the valorization of exponents who can contribute in writing a different story of the branches of knowledge that deal with the relationship between space and politics whilst belonging to other areas of expertise, only on few occasions. More in general, the histories of political geography and of geopolitics are full of gray areas, while reliable general reconstructions are lacking. Despite the efforts of recent years, the need of philologically acceptable studies on individual works, scholars and cultural phenomena, is undeniable. The history of political geography and of geopolitics largely appears as still to be written, and with only one certainty: disciplinary recovery relies on the concrete awareness of the past.

Contributions regarding the following topics will be evaluated:

  • Authors, cultural trends and works related to political geography
  • Authors, cultural trends and works related to geopolitics
  • Authors, cultural trends and works which have examined the relationship between space and politics even if they do not disciplinarily belong to political geography or to geopolitics
  • Visual representations, geographic and geopolitical cartography
  • The relationship between spatial branches of knowledge and power in their respective political and cultural contexts
  • Processes of disciplinary institutionalization and organization of geographical knowledge
  • Disciplinary contacts and contaminations: the relationship between political geography and geopolitics and other branches of knowledge
  • The relationship between political geography and geopolitics
  • Theory and method of the history of geography
  • Translations and comments of brief essays by great authors

Authors are invited to send the abstracts of their articles – in Italian or English – without exceeding 400 words, and a brief (one paragraph at the most) biographical note by 15 November 2015. Mail must be sent electronically, through the use of the following contact form [click].
Within 10 days from dispatch, the authors of approved abstracts will receive a request to send their complete articles for peer review. A maximum length for articles is not foreseen, however, it is strongly recommended that they not exceed 35.000 characters. Articles are accepted in Italian, French, English and Spanish. All submitted articles must be unpublished and cannot be simultaneously offered to third parties. By submitting the article, the author states his ownership on its publishing rights for Italy and its exclusive assignment to GEOPOLITICA. Articles accepted in a language different than Italian could be published in translation, at discretion of the editorial staff. Articles (including those in Italian) must be equipped with an abstract in English (100-150 words) and with three key words, also in English. Articles should stricly follow the journal guidelines [click].
The deadline for submitting final article proofs is 30 January 2016. The invitation to submit a complete article does not guarantee its publication. Even articles approved by reviewers may not be published in the designated issue due to lack of space; however, following consent of the author, they will be published in a subsequent issue.

The publication of number 1 of the fifth volume of GEOPOLITICA is expected in June/July 2016.
GEOPOLITICA is the review of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Geopolitics and Auxiliary Sciences (IsAG), based in Rome; the journal is recognized by ANVUR (the Italian Agency for the Evaluation of University and Research) as “scientific journal” for Disciplinary Areas 11 (Historical, Philosophical, Pedagogical and Psychological Sciences), 13 (Economical and Statistical Sciences) and 14 (Political and Social Sciences).
